The forthcoming Chief Justice of India (CJI), Justice B.R. Gavai, engaged in an insightful dialogue with the media on Sunday, addressing several pressing issues. He stated, 'I will not assume any posts after retirement. Following the esteemed office of CJI, one should refrain from additional responsibilities.'

'Judges Stunned by Attack News'

On the Supreme Court's press release concerning the Pahalgam terror attack, Justice Gavai remarked, 'When the nation faces crises, the Supreme Court cannot remain indifferent. We are integral to this nation.' He elaborated that a full court meeting was convened immediately after learning about the attack, leaving all judges in shock.

'Judges Should Maintain Public Dialogue'

Reflecting on his visit to Manipur, Justice Gavai shared, 'An elderly woman there told me, 'You're welcome into our home.' In that moment, I truly felt unity and belonging.' He emphasized, 'Judges should not remain secluded in 'ivory towers.' They must engage in dialogue with the public.'

  Justice Gavai reiterated, 'I will not accept any position after retirement. I believe once someone has served as Chief Justice, they should not take on further responsibilities.'

Swearing-In the Day After Buddha Purnima

Addressing comments about the Supreme Court, he stated, 'What is truly supreme is known to all. The real supremacy lies in the Constitution.' Upon becoming the first Buddhist CJI, Justice Gavai noted it is a mere coincidence that he will take the oath just a day after Buddha Purnima. 'It is a proud moment for me.'
