How Did Purnam Kumar Reach Pakistan?
Purnam Kumar mistakenly crossed the International Border, which led to his apprehension by the Pakistani Rangers. He was stationed in Punjab’s Ferozepur sector. On May 7th, under 'Operation Sindoor,' India conducted precision strikes on terror hideouts. In retaliation, Pakistan also launched counter-attacks, heightening tensions and worries for Purnam's family.
Wife Hoped for Return
Purnam Kumar’s wife, Rajni, expressed hope that the DGMO talks would raise her husband’s issue. She said, ‘When the Indian Army detained a Pakistani Ranger in Rajasthan on May 3rd, I felt my husband might be released too. However, that did not happen. Now, the DGMO talks bring new hope.'
Rajni also mentioned that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called her on Sunday, assuring her of all possible assistance. The Chief Minister also spoke about providing medical support to her in-laws.
Pahalgam Terror Attack and Operation Sindoor
On April 22, 2025, Pakistan-backed terrorists attacked tourists and civilians in Pahalgam, one of the deadliest attacks in India since the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, reinforcing India’s zero-tolerance policy on terrorism.
In response, on May 7th, India launched Operation Sindoor, involving the coordinated efforts of the Indian Air Force, Army, and Navy to dismantle terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. This operation not only dismantled terrorist infrastructure but sent a clear message to Pakistan that India would not tolerate any terror activities.
Following the operation, the night of May 7-8 saw Pakistan launching drone and missile attacks on 15 Indian military bases such as Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, and Amritsar. However, integrated efforts by the Indian Navy, Air Force, and Army foiled these attacks, with the Indian Navy deploying its Carrier Battle Group and advanced air defense systems to neutralize Pakistani air elements over the sea.
