During the Rajya Sabha proceedings in Parliament, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan questioned Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar’s tone. She commented, ‘I am an artist and understand body language and expression. I apologize, but your tone is not okay. It is unacceptable.’ This remark angered the chairman, leading to a tumultuous session and a walkout by the opposition. Opposition members chanted 'bullying will not be tolerated'. At the same time, Leader of the House JP Nadda brought a censure motion against the opposition.
An angered chairman directed his comments towards Jaya Bachchan, ‘You have achieved great things, and you know that an actor is a director's subject. You are questioning my tone. This will not be tolerated. You are a celebrity.’ From the opposition side, it was argued that Bachchan is a senior member of parliament and should not be called a celebrity.
The chairman responded, saying, ‘A senior member is demeaning the chair. I have my script.’ As the opposition continued their protests and walked out, the chairman remarked, ‘They don’t want to be a part of this discussion, walking out on their duty.’ He further referenced movements like the Quit India Movement of August 9, 1942, and the Emergency, questioning the opposition’s stance.
The chairman highlighted the recognition India is receiving globally, pointing out, ‘Today they left the parliament. The world acknowledges us. The public sees our development. We are on a journey of growth. I use this platform with full responsibility. India is a peaceful nation. Our Prime Minister is globally recognized. India has made history by repeating the government for the third time in a row. Yet, some cite examples from neighboring countries.’
He mentioned a segment setting a narrative and targeting our institutions, noting, ‘Those with right-wing thinking are observing what is happening. The opposition walked out chanting LoP LoP. He also mentioned the Emergency, highlighting how this is not just simple disruption but an orchestrated mechanism. Every citizen should understand that this is an insult to democracy.’
Nadda brings condemnation motion
Leader of the House JP Nadda stated that not only the ruling party but the entire nation stands with you. The behavior exhibited towards you is irresponsible and disgraceful. They have sunk so low that in their opposition to the party and individuals, they oppose the nation. When the opposition’s voice is seen aligning with forces that wish to divide the country, it casts doubt over the regional parties' agenda to weaken the nation.
He emphasized that all parties are driven by the motive to disrupt the house proceedings and should apologize, paying heed to their conduct regarding the dignity of the house. JP Nadda brought a censure motion against the opposition's behavior. Subsequently, the proceedings of the house were adjourned until 2 pm.
