Former Jaunpur Lok Sabha MP and JDU National General Secretary Dhananjay Singh was sentenced to seven years in jail along with a fine of 50,000 INR. He was found guilty in a kidnapping and extortion case. His political career now seems to be in jeopardy as he was preparing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
On 10th May 2020, Namami Gange's project manager Abhinav Singhal lodged a case alleging kidnapping and extortion against Singh and his accomplice Vikram at the Line Bazar police station in Jaunpur.

He then used threats and extortion to pressure Singhal into supplying substandard materials, resulting in his arrest in connection with the case last Tuesday. Initially granted bail, Singh's recent judicial developments have severely hampered his campaign for the elections.
Singh had confirmed his electoral ambitions through a social media post following the first list of BJP candidates. BJP declared Kripashankar Singh as their candidate for the Jaunpur Lok Sabha seat previously held by Singh.
In an unexpected twist, Singh, who became a legislator at the age of 27, now faces a murky political future. Despite the setback of the BJP's candidate announcement and his apparent exclusion from the JD(U)'s party ticket considerations, he has publicly declared his intention to contest the elections.
However, the attention shifts back to 1998 when Singh, after reportedly dying in an encounter, astonishingly 'resurrected' three months later, stirring controversy around police conduct and his own political saga.
