Jammu & Kashmir: Rajya Sabha Poll Results, National Conference Wins 3, BJP 1 Seat

Following the August 5, 2019 abrogation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir were divided into two Union Territories. This is the first legislative council election since.

The results for the Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir's four seats have been announced. Out of the four, candidates from the National Conference (NC) have claimed victory in three seats, while the fourth was secured by the BJP.

National Conference's Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo, and Shami Oberoi emerged victorious, while BJP's Sat Sharma won the fourth seat, garnering 32 votes. Sat Sharma currently holds the position of president of the Jammu and Kashmir BJP.

According to the party's statement, Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan of the National Conference has secured a win, receiving 58 votes. He faced BJP's Ali Mohammad Mir. On another seat, NC's Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo contested against BJP's Rakesh Mahajan. The Congress and People's Democratic Party also extended support to the National Conference during these elections.

Notably, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah were present in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to extend congratulations to the successful candidates. Following the results for the four legislative council seats, Omar Abdullah is set to address the media in Srinagar.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah extended hearty congratulations to the National Conference candidates, saying, 'Congratulations to my colleagues Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan, Sajjad Kichloo, and Shami Oberoi for their triumph in the legislative council elections. They are going to embark on a new journey of representing the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the parliament. Best wishes!'

It is pertinent to note that the Election Commission issued three separate notifications for the legislative council elections for the total of four seats. While two of them witnessed voting under different notifications, the remaining two underwent elections under a common notice held on Friday.
