In the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, a wave of panic spread on Saturday morning when workers stumbled upon an old, rusted mortar shell during a drain excavation. This shell was discovered near an educational institution in Samba town, where workers were busy with the dig around 10 AM. Once they spotted the suspicious metallic object, they promptly notified the local police.
Mortar Shell Found in the Drain
According to a news agency report, the police team from the relevant precinct arrived swiftly upon receiving the information and cordoned off the entire area for security reasons. Officials noted that although the shell is quite old and rusted, the explosive material inside might be dangerous. To prevent any mishaps, the area was entirely evacuated and all public movement was restrained.
Bomb Disposal Squad on the Scene
Subsequently, the Bomb Disposal Squad was summoned, equipped with specialized tools and protective gear, to the scene. The team first cleared the soil around the shell and then conducted a preliminary analysis of its structure and safety measures.
Officials stated that it is a high-grade explosive, necessitating careful disarmament. The bomb disposal team's neutralization process is ongoing, and the area will remain sealed until the investigation and safe disposal are completed.
Security Agencies Delve into Investigation
Local administration and police have urged the public to maintain calm and to disregard rumors. Meanwhile, investigations are underway to uncover the shell's origins. Initial estimates suggest it might be a relic from past military drills or have drifted here from elsewhere. However, officials indicated that clarity will only come post-investigation.
