Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is currently on an international visit to the United States for the UNGA80 High-Level General Debate, scheduled from September 23 to September 29. On September 27, Jaishankar will address the assembly, representing India. Before the opening of UNGA80, Jaishankar met with the Philippines' Foreign Secretary, Theresa Lazaro.
Taking to social media platform X, Jaishankar shared the news of his meeting with Lazaro. Together, they explored the growth of the existing strategic partnership, defense, and security collaboration, alongside broadening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
During this encounter, the leaders conducted a follow-up on recent advancements post-Philippine President Bongbong Marcos' visit to India. The discussion aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties.
Last month, in August, President Bongbong embarked on a five-day state visit to India. This occasion marked the 75th anniversary of bilateral relations between India and the Philippines, witnessing the agreement to advance various sectors such as trade, defense, tourism, and pharmaceuticals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remarked positively on the occasion, describing the India-Philippines alliance as one of friendship and partnership, underscoring a new dimension in their relationship.
Impact on China with Strengthened India-Philippines Relations?
The stronger relations between India and the Philippines have led to enhanced defense cooperation. The joint naval exercises have introduced a new active competitor in the South China Sea, a region traditionally dominated by China, hitherto unchallenged.
Recently, the Philippines procured BrahMos missiles, signifying its intent to enhance its defense systems, thereby contributing to the regional military balance.
