Iran is currently under immense pressure, not just regarding its borders and nuclear facilities' security, but also with internal law and order issues becoming increasingly challenging. Recent large-scale protests have turned violent, involving arson, vandalism, and damage to religious sites. Today's team reached the scene to assess the latest developments.
One of Tehran’s largest and busiest markets, the Tajrish Market, was hit by these demonstrations. Several shops had their shutters broken, and burn marks were visible in some sections.
Attempt to Damage the Imamzadeh Saleh Mausoleum
Protesters also attempted to vandalize around the Imamzadeh Saleh Mausoleum. This sacred site is where one of Iran's prominent nuclear scientists is interred. Although the main structure did not suffer severe damage, signs of harm were evident in some parts of the complex. In response, security around the area has been tightened significantly.
Most Severe Arson in the Mosque of Al-Rasul at Kas Square
The area around the Mosque of Al-Rasul at Kas Square suffered the brunt of the arson incidents. A nearby bank was also set ablaze. Although parts have been repaired, scorch marks on walls and shops remain.
The Government Faces an Internal Security Conundrum
Iran's security strategy has traditionally focused on external threats and securing nuclear sites. These events have underscored the need for the government to equally prioritize internal security. The targeting of religious sites has heightened the sensitivity of the situation.
Security agencies have intensified patrolling in numerous areas and deployed additional forces at sensitive points. Though the situation is reported to be under control, vigilance remains high.
