The cause of the accident? Early reports by Iranian media suggest poor weather led to the helicopter's harrowing 'hard landing.' The Tehran Times reported that dense fog was a significant factor in the mishap, which happened approximately 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of Tehran, near the Zolfā border in Azerbaijan province.

President Raisi's convoy included three helicopters, two of which returned safely. Unfortunately, the one carrying not only President Raisi but also Iran's Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian, the Governor of Eastern Azerbaijan Province Malek Rahmati, and religious leader Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem was the one that did not return.
