Iran is currently facing one of the most severe military crises in its history, yet its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has not been seen in public for the past week. The 86-year-old leader's silence and absence have stirred anxiety, speculation, and uncertainty throughout the country.

Khamenei's absence is particularly conspicuous as Iran recently faced significant assaults on its crucial nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan by the United States, with Israel persistently launching missile attacks. However, Iran retaliated by striking the U.S. airbase in Qatar with missiles. Subsequently, through the mediation of former U.S. President Donald Trump, a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was established.

Rumored to be Hidden in a Secret Bunker

Iranian media has not broadcast any pictures or messages from Khamenei in recent days. According to intelligence sources, he is believed to have relocated to a secret underground bunker, avoiding any electronic communication to prevent potential assassination attempts. The New York Times has reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not dismissed this possibility, though Trump advised against attacking the Supreme Leader.

Public Unease, Government Silence

Reports suggest even Iran's leading government officials are disconnected from Khamenei. When an anchor on Iranian state TV inquired about Khamenei's condition from a senior official, expressing public worries, Fazeli brushed off the question, urging everyone to pray instead. Those responsible for the Supreme Leader's security remain vigilant.

'If Khamenei were to die...,' Concerns Voiced in Iranian Media

Iranian newspapers have also begun to express their concerns. Mohsen Khalife, editor of the Khanman newspaper, voiced apprehension over Khamenei's prolonged absence, stating that if Khamenei were to die, his funeral would be unprecedentedly grand and historic.

An Accelerated Search for Khamenei's Successor

According to Reuters, Iran's top religious committee, established by Khamenei two years ago to identify his successor, has intensified its meetings. Intelligence indicates that Khamenei and his family are safeguarded within a protective circle provided by the Revolutionary Guards' Vali-e-Amr special unit.

The Toll of a 12-Day Bloody Conflict

The conflict between Iran and Israel erupted on June 13 when airstrikes claimed the lives of numerous high-ranking Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists. In response, Iran launched over 500 missiles and 1,000 drones at Israel. Some reports indicate that several missiles successfully evaded Israel's air defense for the first time. Iran claims 627 fatalities and approximately 5,000 injuries in the conflict, whereas Israel has confirmed the deaths of 28 individuals.
