India continues to test new missiles, including those launched from the ground and fighter jets. The focus is now on upgrading the Indian Navy's submarine-launched missiles. The next potential addition to the Indian Navy's submarine arsenal is the nuclear ballistic missile K-5 from the K Series. This is a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).
Developed indigenously, this missile can carry a 2000 kg warhead, be it conventional or nuclear. Currently, its range is reported to be 5,000 to 6,000 kilometers, but with a lighter warhead, it can reach 8,000 to 9,000 kilometers. The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is responsible for developing this missile.

If launched from a submarine in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), this missile could target major cities in China and Pakistan within minutes. Currently, it is equipped in Arihant-class and S-5 class submarines, with plans for further deployment in other submarines in the future.
Capable of Multiple Target Strikes
The K-5 ballistic missile is expected to be equipped with technology to evade radar and countermeasures to prevent detection. Additionally, it may incorporate Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) technology to hit multiple targets in a single strike.

India Currently Holds K-4 Series Missiles
India's arsenal includes K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, with ranges from 750 to 3,500 kilometers. As the navy builds new submarines, new missiles like the K-5 and K-6 SLBM will be necessary to extend the range of attacks.
The Agni-5 series SLBM can also be utilized. The world recognizes the power of the Agni-5 missile. China and Pakistan are particularly wary of it, as it covers the entire range of Pakistan and half of China. Yet, the advanced K Series missiles are expected to be included for enhanced capabilities.

The Power of Agni-5 SLBM
This intercontinental nuclear ballistic missile boasts a range of 7,000 to 8,000 kilometers. It can carry multiple warheads, thanks to its MIRV technology, making it capable of hitting five targets simultaneously. With a maximum speed of over 30,000 kilometers per hour, its payload can include nuclear or conventional weapons up to 400 kilograms.
The Mighty K-6 Missile
Currently under development, the K-6 missile is 39 feet long and can carry 3,000 kilograms of nuclear payload, targeting multiple locations. This missile will have a range of 8,000 to 12,000 kilometers and is intended for the S-5 submarine.
