The Indian Army, in collaboration with Jammu-Kashmir Police (JKP), has launched an initiative to train Village Defense Guards (VDGs) aimed at bolstering the security of local communities. This initiative seeks to impart essential skills to civilians, enhancing the overall security infrastructure of the region.
Currently, around 600 individuals are undergoing training in operating automatic rifles, conducting squad post drills, and learning small-scale strategies. This training is provided at the unit level near their villages, allowing VDGs to immediately apply their skills in real-world scenarios. Each VDG unit is given at least three days of intensive training.
Led by various units of the Indian Army, the training program also leverages the resources and expertise of the Corps Battle School, Sarol. This ensures that VDGs receive training from experienced and skilled personnel, further augmenting their abilities.
Under this training program, Village Defense Guards (VDGs) are equipped with specialized knowledge of automatic weapons and tactical operations. The primary objective is to ensure local security while countering terrorist threats effectively.
This initiative was launched at the request of Jammu-Kashmir Police and has shown significant progress. So far, approximately 500 individuals have been trained in the Rajouri region, while an additional 85-90 people have received training in the Doda and Kishtwar regions.
Moreover, through the coordination of the Army Ordnance Depot and JKP, VDGs are being provided with Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs), which are crucial for enhancing their capabilities and empowering them further. This initiative is a critical step towards ensuring the safety and security of Jammu-Kashmir's citizens.
