Concern for India before final with Pakistan, injuries looming

Before the Asia Cup final, Team India faced a significant setback. In the match against Sri Lanka on Friday, all-rounder Hardik Pandya had to leave the field after bowling just one over. Meanwhile, star opener Abhishek Sharma also faced difficulties. Pandya initiated India's defense of 202 runs by dismissing Sri Lankan opener Kusal Mendis. However, he was seen clutching his thigh after completing the over and then left the field, raising concerns ahead of the final.

Bowling coach Morkel later explained that Pandya was suffering from cramps due to the humid conditions in Dubai. The team management breathed a sigh of relief, confirming that the all-rounder had not sustained any serious injury. A decision on his availability for the final will be made after evaluating his fitness on Saturday.

A Challenging Day for Indian Bowlers

The Indian bowlers had to toil hard on Friday as Sri Lanka, powered by Pathum Nissanka's splendid 107-run innings, tied the match at 202 runs in 20 overs. The contest then proceeded to a Super Over where Sri Lanka faltered, managing only two runs off five balls.

Abhishek Sharma Faces Challenges Too

Abhishek Sharma, who scored a third consecutive half-century in the tournament, also experienced cramps, necessitating a substitute fielder during Sri Lanka's innings. Morkel remarked that both players suffered from cramps. Regarding Hardik, an assessment will be conducted overnight, with a decision to follow in the morning.

Morkel indicated that India will not practice a day before the final, focusing instead on recovery. Meanwhile, Pakistan will enjoy an extra day of rest after playing their last Super-4 match on Thursday. Morkel stated, 'Training is unlikely. The players are already in ice baths, and their recovery process began immediately after the match. The best approach is sleep and rest for the legs. Hopefully, they will rise refreshed tomorrow.'

India had rested Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube for their last Super-4 match. The Asian giants hope that Hardik recovers in time, as his presence offers crucial balance to the team. Notably, his performances under pressure, like those witnessed in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, hold great significance.

If Pandya is unavailable, India might field Arshdeep Singh, who, despite an expensive initial spell on Friday, provided crucial support at key junctures. This will be the first Asia Cup final meeting between India and Pakistan.
