In spite of India's strong objections, the US has once again made remarks on India's internal matters. Initially, regarding the arrest of Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and now expressing views on the frozen bank accounts of the Congress Party.
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the US encourages impartial, transparent, and timely legal procedures on every issue. 'He isn't discussing any private diplomatic conversations, but certainly, they promote fair, transparent, and timely legal processes', he said during a conversation with the agency, adding that no one should object to this stance.
US had also Commented on Kejriwal's Case
Previously, the US had commented on the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, which led to strong opposition from India. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs summoned Deputy Chief of the US Mission, Gloria Berbena, to their South Block office in Delhi for a meeting that lasted about 30 minutes.
Firm Objection was Expressed by India
Reports indicated that a US State Department official had encouraged a fair, transparent, and timely legal process for Chief Minister Kejriwal. Subsequently, India's Ministry of External Affairs expressed strong disapproval of the remarks made by the US spokesperson.
'Setting a Bad Precedent'
The Ministry further stated that there is an expectation in diplomacy to respect others' sovereignty and internal affairs, especially in the case of democracies, the responsibility is even greater. Not doing so could set a bad example, the statement warned.
The Case Involving CM Kejriwal's Arrest
Prior to this, India had also summoned the Deputy Head of the German Mission in Delhi and had strongly objected to the comments made by their Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the arrest of the Chief Minister. It is to be noted that the Enforcement Directorate arrested Kejriwal in connection with a money laundering case linked to a liquor scam.
