The Indian cricket team recently triumphed over Pakistan to clinch the Asia Cup 2025. Yet, they declined the honor of receiving the trophy at the hands of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chief Mohsin Naqvi. In an unusual turn, Naqvi took the trophy to a Dubai hotel and later left it at the ACC office before returning to Pakistan, refusing to deliver it to the Indian team personally. Naqvi suggested that Suryakumar Yadav should come to the ACC office to receive the trophy.
Now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally emailed ACC Chief Mohsin Naqvi, urging swift action to deliver the trophy to the rightful victors. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, in a conversation with India Today, asserted, 'We have communicated to the ACC the necessity of presenting the trophy to the champion team. We await their response. If a reply is not forthcoming or is negative, we will escalate the matter to the ICC. We are determined to proceed step by step, persistently pursuing resolution.'
Saikia further clarified that should Mohsin Naqvi persist in withholding the Asia Cup trophy, the BCCI is poised to take serious measures. If the trophy is not transferred to India, an appeal will be made to the International Cricket Council (ICC), highlighting the gravity of the matter. Naqvi serves as Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as well.
Mohsin Naqvi Stays Firm in His Stance
On September 28, at the thrilling final held at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the Indian squad led by Suryakumar Yadav defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets. Well before the game concluded, the Indian players unambiguously expressed their refusal to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. They requested that it be presented to them by the Vice Chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB).
However, Mohsin Naqvi rebuffed this demand, leaving Indian players lingering on the field for nearly an hour post-victory. With no shift in circumstance, they retreated to the dressing room sans trophy. Throughout the tournament, India soundly vanquished Pakistan on three occasions, abstaining from the typical post-match handshake in a decision that sparked fervent discussions. Their actions, they claimed, were in honor of their fans' sentiments.
