Following the resounding victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the 13th parliamentary elections, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended heartfelt congratulations to Tarique Rahman. In a message shared on social media, PM Modi called this victory an unbreakable trust of Bangladesh's people in their leadership.
Prime Minister Modi wrote, "I extend my warm congratulations to Tarique Rahman for BNP's decisive victory in the parliamentary elections. This triumph reflects the unwavering trust of the Bangladeshi people in your leadership." He further expressed India's eagerness to stand by a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh and work jointly on shared development goals.
This was the first major election in Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina stepped down from power. After a 17-year hiatus, Tarique Rahman's return to power marks a significant 'turning point' in South Asian politics. Through this congratulatory message, India has clearly indicated its priority to continue strong bilateral relations with the new government.

It's noteworthy that voting for the general election in Bangladesh took place on Thursday, and the counting began by the evening. The current results show Rahman's party-led coalition winning 209 seats, securing a two-thirds majority in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad, the national parliament.
While claiming victory, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has extended congratulations to the citizens yet appealed to supporters to refrain from celebrating. The party has encouraged workers and supporters to offer Friday prayers throughout the country and remember former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia instead of holding celebratory events.
