The identity of the individual who opened fire on former United States President Donald Trump has been confirmed. Despite being neutralized by security after the attack, the details of who he was and where he came from have now been unveiled. The assailant fired at Trump from a distance of 120 meters. US investigative agencies are treating the assault as an attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Secret Service agents at the scene responded immediately, neutralizing the threat on the spot.
Who is the assailant and where is he from?
The attacker has been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old. Bethel Park is located about 40 miles south of Butler. An AR-15 semi-automatic rifle was recovered from the scene, which is likely the weapon used by the young man to target Donald Trump and his rally. In a swift counter-response by the US Secret Service, the assailant received a fatal shot to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Donald Trump was speaking on a stage during the open-air campaign event at Butler Farm Show Ground. The area was so open that the sniper had no difficulty targeting him. The assailant positioned himself on the roof of a nearby manufacturing company, approximately 120 meters away, where he had a clear shot.
Following this incident, US Secret Service counter-sniper teams, who were stationed behind Trump at another structure, akin to a company warehouse, were activated. Upon the assailant's gunfire, the counter-sniper team engaged from about 200 meters away, ensuring the immediate threat was contained. The building where the suspect’s body was found belongs to AGR International, a company that provides automated equipment for the glass and plastic packaging industry.
Security increased at Trump Tower
Following the shooting incident at Donald Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the New York police have heightened security at Trump Tower. This precaution was taken as the investigation into the attack is considered an assault on his life. Uniformed officers and a police dog were seen patrolling outside the main entrance of the building on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue.
