The victim, Neha Hirmat, daughter of Congress corporator Niranjan Hirmat, was an MCA student at the local BVVB College. The accused, Fayaz from Belgaum district's Savadatti, also studied there and had been following her for some time.
It is said that Fayaz had proposed to Neha, which she declined. Enraged by her rejection, he fatally attacked her with a knife in the college campus and fled the scene.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa's son and BJP leader Vijayendra Yediyurappa expressed his anguish, stating, "A Congress corporator's daughter has been brutally murdered in broad daylight by Fayaz, after she refused his marital proposal. Since Congress came to power, the promise of women's safety has proven to be empty. The increasing frequency of assaults and murders against women is deeply concerning, and the Siddaramaiah-led government has failed to ensure a safe environment for our sisters and daughters. Criminal elements are on the rise here."
