The CBI has started probing the lady doctor's rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. A 25-member team from CBI has arrived from Delhi, including officers of Additional Director and Joint Director levels. Accompanying them are a 5-member CFSL team from Delhi and doctors from AIIMS. Upon arrival in Kolkata, the CBI took the accused into custody. Meanwhile, CM Mamata Banerjee has demanded that the CBI ensure the case is resolved by Sunday.
Subsequently, all investigation documents so far collected by Kolkata Police were taken into CBI custody. The CBI has formed three teams that are investigating at different locations simultaneously. One team visited the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where the lady doctor's body was found on August 9. Another CBI team took custody of the accused, Sanjay Roy, from Kolkata Police after a medical test.
The third CBI team has been tasked with coordinating with Kolkata Police. The CBI plans to present the accused in court to request an extension of custody. The investigation was handed over to the CBI by Kolkata High Court's orders, directing the police to submit the case diary and all documents to the CBI by 10 AM on August 14.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday supported the Kolkata High Court's decision to hand over the case to the CBI for investigation but criticized the CPI(M) and BJP for politicizing the tragic incident and sparking protests. The TMC supremo also demanded the CBI resolve the case by Sunday and stated that Kolkata Police had already completed 90 percent of the investigation.
Mamata Banerjee appealed to protesting doctors to resume their duties as healthcare services were being severely impacted. She also demanded capital punishment for the culprits. She said, "We will abide by the orders of the Calcutta High Court and offer full support to the CBI. We have no issues with the CBI taking over the case as we want a quick resolution."
She added, "I will personally take to the streets on Friday and demand that the CBI ensure the case is resolved by Sunday. Kolkata Police have already completed 90 percent of the investigation, and the culprits should be hanged. Criticize me all you want, but please don't criticize the state. I am appalled at the malicious campaign being spread on social media and demand its cessation."
This horrifying incident occurred on the night of August 8-9 when the body of a trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College was found. The doctor, aged 31, was on night duty with three other doctors that night. Two were from the Chest Medicine Department, and one was a trainee. A hospital staff member was also present. That night, all doctors and staff had dinner together.

Afterwards, the female doctor went to sleep in the seminar hall around 2 AM. Sanjay Roy entered this hall through the back entrance, brutally murdered the doctor, and then raped her. Notably, this accused wasn't a hospital staff member or a patient's relative; he worked as a civic volunteer for Kolkata Police.
Usually, he would be present to assist when a police officer was admitted to this medical college. However, on the day of the incident, he had come to the hospital's back area to drink alcohol. After consuming alcohol, he watched obscene videos on his mobile phone before committing the crime.
The next morning, around 4:45 AM, he was seen leaving the seminar hall. After committing the crime, he tried to tamper with evidence. Police found evidence suggesting he attempted to wash away blood stains at the scene. After returning home, he washed his clothes. A case has been registered against the accused under IPC sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder).
