A video from the capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, has gone viral on social media, showing two young men mercilessly beating a dog with sticks. This incident reportedly occurred on February 1, within the Saadatganj police station area, and the footage surfaced on Ex (formerly Twitter) on February 2. The video reveals both men severely beating the dog, resulting in one of its legs breaking, with blood oozing out. The ground is also seen smeared with blood.
In the video, two dogs are seen sitting near a black iron gate. Suddenly, a young man approaches with a stick and starts hitting. One dog manages to escape, while the other gets stuck. The young man starts beating the dog with a stick. Shortly after, another young man arrives with a stick and begins hitting the dog. After the beating, the dog is seen bleeding from its leg.
Following the viral spread of this animal cruelty video on social media, the Lucknow Police took immediate notice and announced that actions are being taken against those responsible for the brutal beating of the dog. According to Lucknow Police, 'A case has been registered at Saadatganj police station and necessary legal action is being pursued. The identity of the two accused individuals has not yet been determined.'
Several laws exist to protect animals from cruelty, but their enforcement remains a challenge. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (PCA Act), prohibits causing unnecessary pain or suffering to any animal. Sections 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code relate to criminal acts such as killing, poisoning, or incapacitating animals, with provisions for fines and imprisonment.
