Highest chased target in Test cricket:
Tuesday (25 November) marked the fourth day of the Guwahati Test between India and South Africa. On this day, the South African team astoundingly built a lead of 548 runs. During this time, the team surpassed a milestone which has never been achieved in the fourth innings on Asian soil.
The South African team declared their innings at 260/5, thanks to Tristan Stubbs' impressive 94 runs. This presented India with a daunting target of 549 runs. As soon as Stubbs was dismissed, the South African team invited India to bat.
This implies that the lead achieved by South Africa has never been chased in Test cricket history. Moreover, achieving this feat in Asia appears to be a pipe dream.
Thus, winning the Guwahati Test seems almost impossible for India. Barring a miracle, even drawing the match would be quite an achievement for the Indian team.
The largest successful chase in test cricket history stands at 418 runs. However, no team in Asia has ever chased a target exceeding 400 runs.
In 2021, the West Indies managed a successful chase of 395 runs against Bangladesh in Chattogram, the highest in the Asian continent. In India, the largest successful chase was 387 runs in the Chennai Test against England in 2008.
