A tragic event has unfolded in the Indirapuram area of Ghaziabad where Anvita Sharma, a dedicated teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dallupura, Delhi, took her life at her in-laws' home. Upon receiving the report, police arrived promptly, taking custody of the body for post-mortem and beginning their investigation.
According to available information, Anvita married Gaurav Kaushik on December 8, 2019, a doctor at Max Hospital. Her father, Anil Sharma, spent 2.6 million rupees on the wedding and included a Swift Dzire car as dowry. Despite this, her in-laws persistently demanded more dowry, subjecting Anvita to mental and physical abuse.
Anvita: Financially Independent Yet Trapped
Even though Anvita was a government school teacher, she lacked financial independence as her salary, ATM card, and checkbook remained in the control of her in-laws. Efforts to retrieve her money were met with physical assault and verbal abuse.
According to her grieving family, on March 16, 2025, Gaurav, along with his father Surendra and mother Manju Sharma, inflicted severe harassment on Anvita. Heartbroken, she left a suicide note before taking her life. She was rushed to Le-Crest Hospital in Vasundhara around 1:30 PM in a critical condition, where she was declared dead by doctors.
Case Registered on Father's Complaint
Based on her father's complaint, the police booked Gaurav Kaushik, Surendra Sharma, and Manju Sharma under Sections 85, 115(2), 352, 80(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The police swiftly arrested the husband and father-in-law, while questioning continues with Manju Sharma.
Actions Reaffirm Domestic Abuse Issue
This incident once again highlights the severe issue of dowry and domestic violence against women. Anvita's family is pressing for justice, urging strict action in such cases to prevent other daughters from facing similar tragedies.
