Veteran Congress leader and MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Shashi Tharoor, has clarified his stand regarding George Soros. Tharoor stated that he has never received any money from George Soros or any of his organizations.
This clarification comes in light of a screenshot of his 15-year-old tweet circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In a tweet dated May 26, 2009, Tharoor mentions, 'Met my old friend George Soros. He seemed quite enthusiastic about India and curious about its neighbors. Soros is far more than just an investor. He is a concerned citizen of the world.'
BJP Targets Congress
Currently, the political atmosphere in India is heated over George Soros. BJP accuses the opposition party of having favorable relations with Soros and alleges that the American investor seeks to harm India's government. Amidst this, Tharoor's 15-year-old tweet has gone viral, drawing scrutiny. People have started questioning him about the tweet. In response, Tharoor explained that he met George Soros only once after that tweet.
Tharoor Describes Their Acquaintance
Discussing his meeting with Soros, Tharoor shared, 'There's an unhealthy curiosity about this tweet. I knew Soros well during my UN days in New York as an honest and globally minded resident. He was a friend in the social sense. I've never sought or received a single penny from him or any of his foundations for myself or for any organization or cause.'
Many Americans Were Invited
Tharoor further explained, 'After this tweet, I only met Soros once more. This meeting took place at the home of then-ambassador and now BJP minister, Hardeep Singh Puri. It was around the time when I was visiting New York as a Minister of State for External Affairs. Puri had invited many prominent Americans to dinner discussions (and it was entirely appropriate). I have had no contact with Soros since. There's never been any political significance to my past associations.'
No Doubts About Troll Factory's Workings
Tharoor remarked, 'I hope this clears up any misunderstandings for those making absurd accusations based on a ridiculous 15-year-old tweet. But I had no doubt about how the troll factory works!'
