Farmers are set to march towards Delhi again from the Shambhu border this coming Sunday. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher noted that today marks 299 days of our protest, and tomorrow we will complete 300 days. We visited injured farmers, one of whom has lost hearing ability. According to Pandher, on Friday (December 6), 16 farmers were injured in a clash with the Haryana police at the Shambhu border, and if minor injuries are counted, the figure may rise to around 25.
Preparations to Halt Farmers
In Ambala, Haryana, and at the Delhi-Haryana Shambhu border, security measures are being tightened as farmers are demonstrating with various demands. As per farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, on December 8 at 12 PM, a contingent of 101 farmers plans to march towards Delhi. Following their announcement, preparations to prevent the demonstration have resumed with increased vigilance at the borders.
Spike-Patterned Breakers and Barriers
Videos of this preparation have emerged on platform X, showing artisans engaged in welding. Spike-patterned barriers and breakers are being positioned to thwart the farmers. Similar preparations were made earlier this year when farmers marched towards Delhi.
Sarwan Singh Pandher Speaks: No Messages Received
Punjab farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated on Saturday that they have received no communication from the central government concerning their demands. He announced that a batch of 101 farmers will calmly march to Delhi on December 8 afternoon. On Friday, protesting farmers tried advancing towards Delhi, but security forces used tear gas at the Haryana-Punjab border to stop them, resulting in injuries to 16 farmers, one with impaired hearing.
Pandher reported that excluding the four severely injured, the rest have been discharged from the hospital. He criticized the central government, commenting, "The Modi government is not in the mood for dialogue."
Haryana DGP Writes to Punjab DGP
The DGP of Haryana penned a letter to Punjab's DGP requesting media personnel to be kept at least 1 km away from the protest site to maintain safety and law and order. The letter references the challenges the Haryana police faced on December 6 at the Shambhu border during the farmers' march. The police encountered difficulties controlling the 101-member group, leading to tense situations and challenges in crowd management.
Attempts to March on 13th and 21st February
Previously, on Friday, Haryana police enforced strict barricading at the Shambhu border and used tear gas to curb the farmer demonstrations. As a precaution, the Haryana government has suspended mobile internet and SMS services in 11 villages of Ambala district until December 9. Farmers had earlier attempted to march towards Delhi on February 13 and 21, but were restrained at the Haryana-Punjab border.
