With just two weeks to go until the announcement of the parliamentary elections, the Election Commission has already refreshed political parties and their leaders on the code of conduct. The Commission has also issued a warning, making it clear that transgressions will lead to stern legal proceedings.

The Electoral Commission for the 2024 General Election has repeated its warning to political parties to maintain decorum in public campaigning, direly stating that any overt or covert violation of the Code of Conduct (MCC) will be met with harsh actions.

Advised to Maintain Decorum in Speeches

In its circular, citing previous elections, the Commission has listed numerous instances where cunning tactics were used to dodge the code's strictures. It has also mentioned the depreciating level of speeches, statements, and debates during recent campaigns.

The Election Commission has given additional advice to all political parties to maintain utmost decorum and restraint, and to enhance or sustain the dignity of election debates based on "issues" during public campaigns. The Commission has urged that political parties refrain from misleading voters with unfounded promises and to avoid baseless or hearsay allegations against opposition leaders or workers.

Do not make public criticisms or levy charges without verification. Avoid dragging the personal lives of opposing politicians, candidates, or workers into politics or discussing matters unrelated to their public life.

Directive to Strictly Adhere to the Rules

Before the parliamentary election campaigns, the Commission has warned to always be respectful towards women. Comply faithfully and rigorously with the rules set for star campaigners under section 77 of Representation of the People Act 1951 and avoid disrespectful language or words in speeches.
