In response to an inappropriate remark about Hema Malini, the Election Commission has taken action against Congress leader Randeep Surjewala. The Commission has prohibited Surjewala from holding rallies and public meetings for the next 48 hours starting this evening at 6 PM. During this period, he will be unable to attend public assemblies, road shows, media interviews, and make public announcements.

Congress General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala stirred controversy with an offensive comment about BJP leader and Mathura MP Hema Malini at a public meeting in Kaithal (Kurukshetra parliamentary constituency) in support of India Gut candidate Sushil Gupta. Surjewala stated, 'Why do people make us legislators, MPs? We are not Hema Malini that we are created for flattery.' Following the backlash, Surjewala clarified, 'It was not my intention to insult or hurt Hema Malini. My statement in the viral video was presented out of context.'

Election Commission Issued Notice to Surjewala

The Commission asked Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to ensure that party leaders uphold the dignity and respect of women in their public speeches, and wanted a reply on the measures taken. The EC required Surjewala to respond to the notice by April 11, while giving Kharge until April 12. Responding to the ECI's notice, Surjewala stated that the dateless video had been manipulated before being posted on social media. He reiterated that he had no intention of humiliating or hurting the actress.

Reacting to Randeep Surjewala's comments, Hema Malini said, 'Let him say whatever he wants. The public is with me. His comments do not affect me. It's the opposition's job to make statements. They won't speak well of me. Whatever he has said does not affect me. I am focused on my work.' Note that Hema Malini is the current BJP MP from Mathura and the party has nominated her as their candidate for this Lok Sabha election. BJP described Surjewala's remarks as disrespectful to women and damaging to their dignity, accusing Congress of harboring hatred towards women.
