Earthquake Tremors Shake China with a 4.5 Magnitude

On Friday morning, tremors of an earthquake were felt in China. The National Center for Seismology reported on its X handle that the earthquake's magnitude was measured at 4.5 on the Richter scale. According to Indian time, these tremors were sensed at 6:29 AM on May 16, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Fortunately, there were no reports of any damage to life or property, and previously, on May 12, tremors were also experienced in China.

On May 12, at 5:11 AM, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Lhaze County in the Shijang autonomous region in southwestern China. Xinhua News Agency reported that the earthquake caused no damage to life and property, with essential infrastructure like water, electricity, roads, and communication remaining unaffected. According to China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, centered at 28.91 degrees North latitude and 87.54 degrees East longitude.

The tremors were felt in various areas, and people rushed out of their homes.

Prior to this, Turkey also experienced a 5.1 magnitude earthquake yesterday. According to Iran's state news agency Mehr, the effects were felt in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. No loss of life or property was reported. This incident followed a 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck near Fry in Greece on Wednesday morning. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 78 kilometers at 1:51 AM local time. The tremors were felt from Cairo in Egypt to Israel, Lebanon, and Jordan. Given the size of the quake, which was centered in the sea southeast of Greece, local authorities issued a tsunami warning as a precaution.

This region is known for high-intensity earthquakes. According to Turkey's disaster management authority, the country experiences at least one earthquake of a 5.0 magnitude annually. Earlier this year, several earthquakes hit the island of Santorini, with many measuring above 5 on the Richter scale, causing no significant damage. In February 2023, powerful earthquakes rocked Turkey and Syria. The first quake had a magnitude of 7.8, followed by a second at 7.5, causing severe shaking that led to the collapse of buildings. The devastating events resulted in the deaths of 59,000 people in Turkey and 8,000 in Syria.
