Republican candidate Donald Trump is making a historic return as the U.S. President for a second, non-consecutive term. This victory positions him among U.S. history's most notable achievers. Trump, following Grover Cleveland, becomes the second president with a non-consecutive term, a record last achieved 132 years ago. Cleveland, as the 22nd and 24th U.S. President, served from 1885-1889 and 1893-1897. Trump's initial presidential term spanned from 2016 to 2020, although he lost the 2020 race to Joe Biden. According to The New York Times, Trump could become the first Republican in 20 years to win the popular vote.
President Facing Two Impeachments
Should he win the White House race, Trump will be the only U.S. president to have faced two impeachment proceedings during his tenure. However, he was acquitted by the Senate in both cases.
The first impeachment was in 2019 over allegations of secretly soliciting Ukraine's help to boost his re-election chances. Allegedly, Trump urged his Ukrainian counterpart, Zelenskyy, to investigate one of his 2020 electoral opponents. Reports say Trump withheld $400 million in military aid to Ukraine, engaged in conflict with Russia.
Allegedly inciting the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, Trump faced a second impeachment on January 13, 2021, just a week before his term's end.
First Criminal Indictment as a Standing President
Earlier this year, Trump was indicted on 34 felony counts, becoming the first U.S. President to take office under legal indictment. In May, Trump was convicted in New York, but sentencing is pending with trial set for November 26.
Accusations against Trump involve falsifying commercial records related to payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. Yet, Trump denies these allegations, upholding his innocence.
