Delhi faces the onset of the monsoon season. Torrential rains have plagued the capital for two days straight, bringing not only relief but also calamities. Following heavy rainfall, two separate tragic incidents occurred at different locations within the city. The first incident took place in Siraspur under the jurisdiction of Badli police station in the outer northern district. Here, two children ventured into an underpass to play in the rainwater and were subsequently found drowned. Police suggest the two were about nine years old. In a separate incident, a 60-year-old man drowned in the flooded Okhla underpass. Okhla underpass has been waterlogged for over 24 hours.
According to police, the incident in Badli occurred at around 2:30 PM. Initial inquiries suggest drowning as the cause. They reported that nearly 2.5-3 feet of water had accumulated in the underpass near the metro station. The Fire Brigade's search operation resulted in the discovery of the two children's bodies.
The children were extracted from the underpass and taken to Jag Jivan Ram Hospital. Dr. Khushdil declared both children deceased upon arrival. Their names are as follows:
1. Gopal, age 092. Unidentified child, age 09
The Superintendent of Badli Police shared that the children lost their lives due to drowning. He mentioned receiving the incident report around 2:25 PM, which initially appeared to be suspect as both children were bathing there at that time.
A 2.5-foot-deep pit collected rainwater
In the Badli region of Siraspur, a 2.5-foot-deep pit filled with rainwater became the site of the tragedy. The police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. Since last night, the city's continuous downpours and storms have led to severe waterlogging across several areas. In the past 24 hours, Delhi has experienced 228.1 mm of rainfall, marking the most rainfall recorded in the capital for June. The Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, surveyed the flood-affected areas and directed all concerned agencies to expedite the clearing of drains to prevent future flooding. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts heavy rains over the next three days for Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh.
A senior citizen drowns in the Okhla underpass
A senior citizen perished in the waterlogged Okhla underpass, identified as 60-year-old Digvijay Chaudhary. The crucial underpass connecting Delhi and Noida has been disrupted due to waterlogging after Friday morning's showers filled it to a depth of nearly four feet. The South Eastern District's DCP Rajesh Dev confirmed the senior's demise. Following police prosecution under investigative provisions, autopsy was conducted and the body was returned to the family.
