The Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation buildings will soon be equipped with grid-connected rooftop solar plants, adding up to 50 MW in total capacity. Delhi's Energy Minister Aatishi has approved this ambitious project, reinforcing it as an integral part of the Delhi Solar Policy.

About 645 buildings—including educational and healthcare institutions, bus depots, and electric sub-stations—covering over 500 square meters will proudly house these solar plants. This initiative is not only an investment in renewable energy but also a smart economic move, promising significant savings for the government.

Boost for Green Energy

With the goal of promoting green energy production, the Delhi Cabinet passed the Delhi Solar Policy on January 29, 2024. Delhi aims to generate 25% of its electricity through solar plants by 2027. However, Chief Minister Kejriwal's administration accused the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of stalling the Solar Policy 2024 for political reasons.

Energy Minister Aatishi expressed strong objections, suggesting that the LG was 'playing for the BJP team', resulting in the Solar Policy 2024 file's obstruction.

Goals of the Delhi Solar Policy 2024

The Kejriwal government has set ambitious targets under the new policy: reducing non-subsidized residential electricity bills to zero and cutting commercial or industrial electricity costs by up to 50% by March 2027. Furthermore, Delhi's total installed solar capacity is expected to triple from the current 1500 MW to 4500 MW. This includes establishing 750 MW of rooftop solar power plants in Delhi and integrating an additional 3750 MW from external solar plants by 2027.
