In a shocking heist disguised as a routine check, two head constables from Delhi Police have been arrested for stealing gold worth over 50 lakh rupees at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Assigned to the Special Operations Squad at the IGI Airport Police Station, these officers allegedly stopped travelers from Muscat and Dubai, seizing their entire gold under the guise of inspection. It has been revealed that the gold, supposedly to be handed over to someone else in India, has raised suspicions of smuggling.
The looted gold is said to have been taken from different individuals arriving from Muscat and Dubai. According to police, a resident of Rajasthan, returning from Muscat, filed a complaint on 24th December stating that on the night of 20th December, both officers took him to a secluded area, robbed him of 600 grams of gold, and physically assaulted him. Similarly, a traveler from Dubai reported a 400-gram gold heist at the hands of these policemen.
Is it Smuggled Gold?
The Delhi Police are now investigating a possible smuggling angle in the case, as both complainants mentioned that they were tasked with delivering this gold within India after arriving from abroad. There are suspicions that the intended recipients in Delhi might be involved in an organized smuggling racket. Meanwhile, the police are gathering information about these individuals.
Rigorous Surveillance of Smugglers at the Airport
It is worth noting that the Indira Gandhi International Airport remains under strict vigilance by police forces to nab smugglers. Recently, a female traveler from Guinea was apprehended on 18th December. After receiving a tip, customs officials detained and interrogated her, leading to a suspicion that was confirmed by a medical exam. The woman was found to be carrying 82 cocaine capsules inside her body, valued at 15.36 crores rupees. Following a medical procedure, the capsules were retrieved, and the woman faces charges under the NDPS Act.
