In an escalation within Tihar Jail, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal finds himself embroiled in controversy. AAP leader Atishi has leveled serious accusations, alleging that the prison authorities are deliberately withholding insulin from Kejriwal – a move she implies is tantamount to an assassination attempt.
Facing these charges, Delhi's LG has sprung into action, demanding a comprehensive report from the Director-General of Prisons within a day. He expressed grave concerns regarding the allegations raised by AAP officials which claim that CM Kejriwal is being denied insulin in custody. In response, the LG has assured that any form of negligence regarding the Chief Minister's health will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
LG Demands Report
According to sources, Delhi's LG VK Saxena has formally requested a detailed report on the allegations that CM Arvind Kejriwal has not been provided insulin while detained. Raj Niwas reports that the LG has taken the accusations seriously, especially those claiming that Kejriwal's medical needs are being neglected in prison. Nonetheless, it is noted that the prison affair squarely falls under the AAP government's jurisdiction.
Tihar Administration Refutes Claims
Sources from the Tihar Administration assert that all such allegations are baseless. Kejriwal continues to receive his regular diet thrice daily from home, along with the necessary medications. They contend that the Chief Minister is undergoing daily medical checkups both in the morning and evening, with reports being published and shown to Kejriwal himself. His medical evaluations are conducted by senior resident doctors of the jail. Notably, with Kejriwal not having received bananas or mangoes for the past three days, his sugar levels have stabilized. According to the prison administration, Kejriwal remains in good health while in jail.
It is worth mentioning that AAP leader Atishi has gone on record to say that a conspiracy to murder Arvind Kejriwal has been organized within Tihar Jail. She alleges that efforts are being made to interrupt the supply of homemade food to Kejriwal. She suggests that the ED has lied about Kejriwal consuming sweets, claiming that he has only been provided with a low-calorie sweetener as prescribed by his doctor. Atishi invites any diabetes doctor to confirm that patients are advised to keep bananas or toffees on hand. She refutes ED's claims that Kejriwal is indulging in fried foods, clarifying that he only partook in the ceremonial offerings on Navratri. Atishi revealed that Kejriwal consumes 54 units of insulin.
'Rumors Against Kejriwal...'
Atishi argues that Kejriwal was on a special diet as part of an insulin reversal program, but since March 21, the program has been halted, and his sugar levels have remained above 300. Despite his requests for insulin, he has not been provided with any, and both the ED and Tihar Jail have denied him video consultation with his doctor.
What did the ED tell the court?
The ED informed the court that Kejriwal had been permitted to eat homemade food. According to the jail DG's report, Kejriwal's diet includes foods that are non-recommended for a person with type 2 diabetes, such as deep-fried foods, fruits, and overly sweet items. The ED speculates that this behavior aims to procure bail for Kejriwal. The court has announced it will request a report from the jail on this matter, and the hearing has now been postponed to Friday.
