On Saturday afternoon, a fire broke out at Cosmos Hospital located in Karkardooma, Delhi. Some of the oxygen cylinders were also engulfed in flames. According to the Delhi Fire Department, as smoke filled the hospital, 11 patients were evacuated to safety by breaking the glass. Other oxygen cylinders were removed in time, averting a potential disaster.
Amit, a housekeeping staff member, had locked himself in the hospital bathroom following the fire, leading to his tragic demise due to suffocation. To extinguish the fire, the Delhi Fire Service deployed eight fire tenders to the scene. Cosmos Hospital, situated in Anand Vihar, specializes in joint replacement and trauma management.
Eight Fatalities in Delhi's Hari Nagar Wall Collapse
In Delhi's Hari Nagar, continuous heavy rainfall on Friday night led to the collapse of a wall, damaging slums situated near an old temple. This unfortunate accident resulted in the death of at least eight individuals. Authorities have evacuated nearby slum dwellers as a precaution. Most residents in these slums were scrap dealers. The injured were taken to Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, but sadly, all succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
Victims identified include Shabibul (30), Rabibul (30), Muttu Ali (45), Rubina (25), Dolly (25), Hashibul, Rukhsana (6), and Haseena (7). One victim's identity remains unknown. Senior police officer Aishwarya Sharma stated, 'There is an old temple here, and next to it are the old slums where the scrap dealers lived. Continuous heavy rain caused the wall to collapse. We have now evacuated these slums to prevent similar future incidents.'
Delhi's Public Life Disrupted by Heavy Rainfall
The incident occurred amid continuous heavy rainfall since Friday night in Delhi. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert. Heavy downpours on the morning of Raksha Bandhan have flooded many areas, submerging underpasses. Torrential rains have led to severe traffic jams. According to the Meteorological Department, until 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Delhi's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 78.7 mm of rain, while Pragati Maidan recorded 100 mm. Amidst the deluge, the Yamuna's water level in Delhi has approached the warning mark of 204.50 meters, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. Agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
