While some parts of the country enjoy a brief respite due to occasional rainfall, Delhi is witnessing the onset of a sweltering season. Last Sunday marked the capital's hottest day of the season so far, with a maximum temperature of 41.1°C, which is two degrees above the average. This has been the highest temperature recorded in the national capital this summer.

With the onset of May's blistering heat, there's no relief in sight for Delhi's dwellers. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) hasn’t provided any updates on heatwave conditions, yet the hot breezes are increasingly palpable. The sky over Delhi is expected to remain clear until May 8th, indicating persistent sunshine hassles and temperatures potentially touching 42°C. Light showers are forecasted for May 9, but with minimal impact. For the entire week, the IMD anticipates maximum temperatures in Delhi to hover between 41°C and 42°C, while minimum temperatures are likely to stay within the range of 24°C to 26°C.

According to the Met Department, severe heatwave warnings have been issued for regions like Bihar, Odisha, Vidarbha, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and parts of Karnataka for May 6. Furthermore, an alert for heavy rainfall with thunderstorms has been issued in Gangetic West Bengal. An orange alert for heavy rains is also in place for Assam and Meghalaya.
The weather forecasting agency Skymet suggests that the Northeast India region can expect light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and gusty winds (40-50 km per hour). Significant rainfall is likely on May 5th and 6th, with Sikkim expecting scattered heavy downpours on May 5th. Additionally, isolated heavy showers might occur in Gangetic West Bengal on May 7th and 8th, while light to moderate rains with thunder and lightning are probable in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand between May 7th and 10th. The Western Himalayan region is set to experience light to moderate rainfall, and snowfall in higher altitudes on May 4th and 5th. Light showers are anticipated for southern Rajasthan and Gujarat on May 5th. Between May 6th and 9th, parts of Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Vidarbha, southeast Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh may witness thunderstorms and light to moderate showers. In some parts of the coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, South interior Karnataka, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu, heatwave conditions are likely to occur at one or two places.
