The gradual removal of CNG-powered auto rickshaws from Delhi's roads has been recommended. A draft of EV Policy 2.0 has been prepared. According to the information revealed on Monday, new registrations for CNG auto rickshaws will not be made after August 15. The new policy will also impact two-wheelers, with recommendations extended to private car owners.

Under the new draft policy, CNG auto permits will also not be renewed after August 15, and all old permits will only be converted to electric auto permits. The policy also recommends the removal of all vehicles used by municipal bodies for transporting waste and city buses.

Shift to Battery-Powered Autos!

The draft suggests that all CNG auto rickshaws older than 10 years must necessarily shift to battery power and be made battery operable. Moreover, from August 15, the use of petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers will not be permitted. Registration of CNG-based three-wheelers used for cargo will also be prohibited.

The policy envisages a phased transition of all waste vehicles of the Delhi Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council, and Water Board to electric vehicles. The draft recommends ensuring 100% electric vehicles in Delhi by December 31, 2027. The proposal is to transition government buses to electric ones.

Only Electric Buses on Delhi Roads!

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) will purchase only electric buses for intra-city routes, while BS-VI category buses will ply inter-state.

For private car owners, it is recommended that if they already have two cars, they should purchase only one electric car. This recommendation will take effect following the notification of EV Policy 2.0. The draft still awaits approval from the Delhi Cabinet, after which the implementation process will commence. The goal is to improve air quality in the capital.
