In an unprecedented move, the Delhi Commission for Women has terminated the employment of 223 staff members with immediate effect. This directive was issued by Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, basing his decision on an investigation report submitted to the LG in 2017.

The reasoning behind the mass dismissal from the Delhi Commission for Women points to allegations that the DCW Chairperson (Swati Maliwal) made these appointments without the necessary approval from the Finance Department or the Delhi LG. Moreover, the DCW was not empowered to make such appointments of contract employees, given that only 40 positions are officially sanctioned as per the DCW Act.

Approval Was Not Sought

Another reason cited for the action is that no approval was obtained for the additional financial burden prior to these appointments. Nor was any assessment conducted to determine the exact number of necessary posts before commencing the recruitment process.

Resigned in January

It's noteworthy that following her nomination as a Rajya Sabha candidate, Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, resigned from her post in January 2024. Appointed by the AAP government in 2015, Maliwal brought attention to numerous significant women-related issues during her tenure.
