Congress Rajya Sabha MP Dhiraj Sahu is once again in the news. Last December, the Income Tax Department recovered 351 crore rupees in cash from his locations. Now, reports indicate that Sahu has paid taxes on 150 crore rupees.
Dhiraj Sahu and his family have been involved in the liquor business. It has come to light that Sahu has paid the income tax due on the earnings of 150 crore rupees. Sahu amended his return for last year and paid the tax on the amount. He claims some of the recovered money is related to business transactions made during the ongoing financial year, for which returns would be filed in the next fiscal period.
Sources mentioned that regarding the remaining amount, there's no concrete information on about 50 crore rupees, therefore, the Tax Department will impose a fine and taxes on it.
Why was Dhiraj Sahu in the news?
The Congress MP was in the limelight last December when the Income Tax Department seized Rs 351.8 crore in cash during a raid at premises linked to the Boudh Distillery Private Limited in Odisha, a company run by his family. According to sources, a WhatsApp group has come under the Enforcement Directorate's investigation, where discussions about the ownership of a seized BMW car in Delhi had taken place.
Officials have shared that the Deputy Commissioner of Sahibganj, Ramniwas Yadav, and Press Advisor of Soren, Abhishek Prasad alias Pintu, appeared before the ED on Saturday for inquiry in connection with the alleged illegal mining and money laundering investigation in the state. ED officers had interrogated Prasad for several hours regarding the case on Friday.
