West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the central government on Thursday, holding it responsible for the deadly floods in the state. She accused the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) of failing to dredge its dams, which resulted in the release of large volumes of water and consequent flooding in multiple districts.
Blaming the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for the man-made flood, Banerjee alleged a conspiracy driving the current crisis. The DVC dams in Maithon and Panchet, located on the Jharkhand-Bengal border, were implicated. While observing the flood situation in Pashkura, West Medinipur district, she warned of cutting all ties with the corporation.
This is a man-made flood: Bengal CM
According to PTI, Mamata Banerjee stated, "This is not rainwater, but the water released from DVC’s dams, which is under the central government’s control. This is a man-made flood and it’s unfortunate. Why is the central government not cleaning the DVC dams, where the water storage capacity has decreased by 36 percent? This is a huge conspiracy. We will not tolerate this and will launch a significant protest against it."
Banerjee claimed that DVC released 5.5 lakh cusecs of water this year, worsening the current crisis. She assured, "I will instruct the administration to ensure adequate relief materials are provided to all affected by the flood."
Government sources revealed that Banerjee will visit flood-affected areas in Hooghly and Howrah following her visit to Pashkura. She has been touring various flood-hit parts of the state since Wednesday.
DVC to halt ties, closure of Bengal-Jharkhand border for 3 days
Mamata Banerjee announced the closure of Bengal-Jharkhand border for three days. She threatened to sever all ties with DVC. According to Banerjee, roads near the Jharkhand border are getting submerged, and she doesn't want vehicles from Jharkhand to drown in the floodwaters. Therefore, she declared a three-day closure of the Jharkhand border.
CM Mamata also mentioned that she had tried to inform the central government three times regarding the water discharge issue by DVC, but the center did not heed her concerns. With DVC under central regulation, the released water has caused extensive flooding in Bengal. Hence, she has decided to cut all ties with DVC.
