The central government has announced the implementation of a nationwide caste census, to take place alongside the regular census. Following this announcement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held an important press conference on Tuesday, expressing support for the government's decision. However, he also outlined some crucial demands directed at the government.

Rahul Gandhi stated, “We had clearly stated in Parliament that we would conduct a caste census and remove the 50% reservation cap. Now that the central government has announced a caste census, we support it. But we also want to know when this census will be conducted.”

He further added, “We agree with Mr. Modi's assertion that there are only four social classes in the country: poor, middle class, rich, and very rich. However, it is important to identify where individuals stand within these categories. Caste data is necessary for this understanding. The caste census is the first step, but we must advance beyond it.”

The Four Major Demands of Congress:
– The central government should quickly announce a timeline:

Rahul Gandhi emphasized that the government should clearly outline the timeline and methodology for the census.

– Adopt the Telangana Model:

He suggested that the central government adopt Telangana's fast, transparent, and inclusive caste survey model.

– Advocacy for Removing the 50% Reservation Cap:

Rahul Gandhi reiterated that, based on caste data, the current constitutional limit on a 50% reservation should be lifted to ensure equitable participation.

– Implement Reservation in Private Educational Institutions:

Rahul Gandhi stated that reservation should be extended into private institutions similarly to government ones. Social justice should not be limited to government jobs but should also ensure equal opportunities in the private sector.

Proposal for Government Cooperation

Rahul Gandhi expressed that the Congress party will fully assist the government in designing the caste census. He said, "This was our vision, and we support it. We've applied substantial pressure on the government to act. After 11 years, the central government has abruptly announced a caste census. It is the initial step toward social justice. Every Congress worker and social justice advocate deserves congratulations, and I am proud of them."

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy tweeted:

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy tweeted, "Based on Rahul Gandhi's foresight and direction, who during his historic #BharatJodoYatra raised the demand for a nationwide caste census for the first time, Telangana was the first state to conduct a caste survey last year. It was the first such survey in independent India, with the last survey conducted by the British in 1931. A statewide comprehensive social, economic, and caste survey found that 56.32% population belongs to backward classes. Based on the report presented in the Telangana State Assembly, the state also proposed a resolution for 42% reservation for OBCs in education, employment, and political posts. Telangana Congress fought across the nation, including national capital protests, demanding that the central government agree to the #CasteCensus. Today, we have demonstrated that Telangana leads, and India follows."
