The leader of the left-wing New Democratic Party (NDP) and Canadian MP Jagmeet Singh issued a stern warning to the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump. Singh asserted that if Trump decides to levy punitive tariffs on Canada and proceed with threats of merging the two nations, Canada will respond decisively.

In a video shared on social media, MP Singh declared, "I've got a message for Donald Trump: Our country is not for sale, not now, not ever. I've traveled across the country and can confidently say Canadians take immense pride in their nation. We are prepared to fight with all our strength to protect it."

'Canada Will Not Retreat from Threats...'

Jagmeet Singh, once an ally of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party, emphasized that Canada will not shrink away from threats but instead is prepared to undertake retaliatory measures. With a stark warning, he stated, "If Donald Trump thinks he can fight us, he'll pay the price."

What Did Trump Say?

As he gears up for his inauguration next week, Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports. Nevertheless, he indicated that a reconsideration might be possible if Ottawa enhances security at the Canada-U.S. border.

Trump also argued that a merger of both nations might lower tariffs and taxes in the U.S., a suggestion top Canadian officials have unequivocally dismissed.

Last week, Justin Trudeau rebuffed the American proposal, dismissing Trump's statements about Canada becoming the 51st state as a distraction from the economic damage that high tariffs might cause American consumers.

Amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Canada, Jagmeet Singh made it clear that if Donald Trump imposes tariffs on us, we must respond with reciprocal tariffs. Historically, Canada has countered U.S. trade measures with its own measures. During Trump’s previous tenure, Ottawa imposed tariffs on bourbon, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and playing cards in response to tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
