The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee, along with three others, to refrain from making any defamatory or inaccurate statements against Governor CV Ananda Bose. Specifically, the High Court instructed Banerjee to avoid derogatory comments about the Governor. The court issued an injunction in the defamation case of Governor vs. Mamata Banerjee.
The day prior, CM Banerjee had expressed in a statement that women had voiced concerns in court about their fear of entering the Raj Bhavan due to the Governor's petition.
The Governor Filed a Defamation Suit
Governor Ananda Bose responded to Banerjee's remarks by filing a defamation suit. Banerjee had commented that recent allegations against the Governor made women feel unsafe about entering the Raj Bhavan in West Bengal.
Avoid Personal Attacks...
In this context, the court emphasized that CV Ananda Bose holds a constitutional position and should not be subjected to personal attacks through social media platforms. The court asserted that in the name of freedom of speech, no defamatory statements should be made that tarnish an individual's reputation. Governor Bose had communicated this stance through his lawyer on Monday.
