Amidst ongoing conflicts with Russia, Britain is set to bolster Ukraine's air defense with 350 missiles. Notably, the funding for these missiles is sourced from the assets seized from Russia. This move aims to protect Ukrainian citizens from the assaults of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The ASRAAM missiles on their way to Ukraine were originally airborne defenses. Thanks to British ingenuity, they are now launchable from the ground. Operated through the RAVEN ground-based air defense system, already in Ukraine, an additional five RAVEN systems will soon enhance their defenses, making it a count of 13.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared, "The cost of Putin's brutal, unlawful war should burden Russia, not Ukraine. Therefore, funds from seized Russian assets are directed towards securing Ukraine. The security of Ukraine is intertwined with that of Britain and wider Europe, and our support for Ukraine remains unwavering."
A 70 Million Pound Investment
Around 70 million pounds (approximately 740 crore rupees) will be invested in these missiles, with the funds generated from the seized Russian assets under the Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) plan.
This year, Britain is granting 4.5 billion pounds (about 47,000 crore rupees) in military aid to Ukraine, marking its largest-ever commitment. This support boosts Britain's economy through job creation in defense manufacturing.
Defense Minister John Healey stated, "The persistent missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities by Russia signify Putin's disinterest in peace. It's crucial to arm Ukraine with robust defensive weapons."
This announcement coincides with Prime Minister Starmer, the Defense Minister, and the Foreign Minister attending the NATO summit in the Netherlands. Here, leaders will deliberate on Middle East tensions and additional support for Ukraine.
