How Educated Was Dharmendra? Schooling in a Punjabi Village

The Bollywood legend Dharmendra Deol is no more. He took his last breath at the age of 89 on November 24. His funeral was held at the Vile Parle cremation ground in Mumbai, where many celebrities came to bid farewell. Dharmendra had been unwell for a considerable period and was hospitalized a few days ago. He entered the film industry at a young age.

Dharmendra ventured into films after completing his 12th grade. Following that, he did not pursue further formal education. In a 2004 affidavit to the Election Commission, Dharmendra revealed that he completed his schooling in Phagwara, Punjab in 1952.

Where did Dharmendra study?

Dharmendra completed his higher secondary education at RG College, Ramgarhia College, in Phagwara. According to some media reports, he spent his childhood in Sanewal, Punjab, and his ancestral village was Nasrali in Ludhiana district. His early education was at Government Senior Secondary School, Lalton Kalan, Ludhiana, where his father was the headmaster.

Later, in 1952, he matriculated from Phagwara, then affiliated with Punjab University, Chandigarh, as almost all schools in Punjab were linked to it.

Though Dharmendra completed his intermediate, he couldn't continue his college education for long. More than studies, he had a keen desire to work and excel. This ambition led him to Mumbai, where he pursued a career in films and eventually became one of the biggest stars in Hindi cinema.

Dharmendra, renowned for his roles in movies like 'Sholay,' 'Seeta Aur Geeta,' 'Chupke Chupke,' and 'Dharam Veer,' won a Lok Sabha election in 2004. He contested from Bikaner under the BJP banner and claimed victory. After starting his political journey in Bikaner and serving as an MP once, he did not contest elections again.

The World Pays Tribute to 'He-Man'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over Dharmendra's passing, remarking on X that his departure signifies “the end of an era.” He fondly remembered Dharmendra's work and his contribution in heartfelt terms.

Numerous artists on social media paid emotional tributes to Dharmendra. Filmmaker Karan Johar expressed on Instagram that Dharmendra's departure marks “the end of an entire era.”

Karan Johar also recalled working with Dharmendra on his directed film 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani' and mentioned it was a privilege to work with him.
