On Friday evening, the bodies of three out of six people missing (abducted) since Monday from Jiribam, Manipur were found near the Jirimukh area on the Assam-Manipur border. These individuals were kidnapped from a camp in Jiribam a few days ago. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Their bodies were seen floating in the Jiri river.
According to media reports, the police were informed about bodies floating in the Jiri river. Following this, Assam Rifles personnel retrieved them. Family members have not yet identified these bodies, but their descriptions match those of three of the six missing individuals.
Six People Were Abducted
Earlier, security forces in Manipur had taken significant action against armed Kuki insurgents, eliminating at least 11, who attempted to attack a police station in Borobekra, Jiribam district. On November 11, at 3:30 PM, Kuki insurgents launched an assault on a CRPF camp in Borobekra, Jiribam. The CRPF responded, resulting in a clash where at least 11 Kuki insurgents were killed.
This attack led to the disappearance of three women and three children, believed to have been abducted by Kuki insurgents in Jiribam. Now, three bodies of these abducted individuals have been found in Jirimukh.
How Did Violence Begin in Manipur?
Violence in Manipur erupted last year on May 3, following protests by the Kuki-Zo tribal community against a Manipur High Court order, leading to arson and vandalism. The Meitei community had filed a petition in the Manipur High Court demanding tribal status.
The Meitei community argued that they had tribal status before the merger of Manipur with India in 1949. After hearing the petition, the Manipur High Court recommended to the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.
