US President Donald Trump welcomed New York City's freshly elected Mayor, Zohra Mamdani, to the White House for in-depth discussions on the city’s primary issues. Mamdani, meeting with President Trump for the very first time in the Oval Office, described the meeting as highly effective and extremely productive, even offering praise for his political opponent whom he criticized during the campaign.

Sitting resolute at his desk, Trump noted, "We just had a very good meeting, truly excellent and highly productive indeed." Standing beside him, Mamdani appeared, following their private discussion, with a demeanor that was markedly more amiable compared to their previous exchanges.

This meeting in the Oval Office was requested by Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist. His decisive victory against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo positioned Mamdani prominently at the forefront of American politics.

Despite months of heated political exchanges, Trump emphasized an emerging partnership, stating, "We’re going to get along well," as the White House confirmed Mamdani’s presence. Avoiding the main entrance used typically by visitors, amidst eager reporters, Mamdani was seen discreetly within the complex, bypassing the media frenzy.

The sole official hint came from White House Communication Director Steven Cheung, who on social media shared a photo of journalists waiting outside the West Wing along with a teasing caption: "Too late, everyone! You’re all too slow!"

Developing Relations between Trump and Mamdani

Earlier, Trump expressed hope for a 'civil' meeting, labeling Mamdani during the elections as a radical leftist activist and predicting a troublesome tenure for New York. However, softening his stance on a radio interview prior to the meeting, Trump mentioned, "I think we’ll get along fine. We both want a stronger New York."

Set to assume office on January 1, Mamdani sought this White House meeting to delve into issues of affordability, housing pressures, and public safety—are areas of little common public ground with Trump. Regular clashes persist over issues such as immigration, policing, and federal funding.

On Thursday, Mamdani stated, "I am willing to collaborate with anyone to make life more affordable for over eight and a half million residents who call this city home."
