As the general elections approach, the BJP is focused on strengthening its organization, especially accelerating its 'Mission South'. The party has its sights set on another ex-CM's family in Kerala. After A.K. Antony's son Anil Antony, it is now K. Karunakaran's daughter Padmaja Venugopal who might be inducted into BJP. The talks are said to be in progress with a potential BJP entry on the horizon.
Speculations intensified on Wednesday when Congress senior leader Padmaja removed a Facebook post dismissing rumors of her party switch. In fact, there were ongoing reports about her probable move to BJP to which Padmaja had responded through a Facebook post, saying it was just a joke with no truth to it. However, removing the post later amplified the rumors of her joining BJP.
'Kerala Could See Another Major Political Upset'
Political analysts suggest that BJP is vigorously working to make inroads in Kerala, opening doors for prominent leaders from other parties. The party is tapping into discontent among leaders and families from Congress and the Left. If Padmaja Venugopal joins BJP, it could be a significant blow to Congress in Kerala. Padmaja's father, K. Karunakaran was a four-time Chief Minister of Kerala and also served as a Union Minister. Known as a seasoned politician, his supporters fondly called him 'Chanakya'. His son, K. Muraleedharan, is a Congress MP. Discussions are underway that Padmaja might be fielded by BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Back in April 2023, BJP inducted Anil Antony, son of Kerala's illustrious leader and former Defence Minister A.K. Antony. Having served as Kerala's CM twice, A.K. Antony is a notable Congress Working Committee member and considered close to Sonia Gandhi. His departure from Congress was seen as a setback for the party. BJP declared Anil Antony as its candidate from the Pathanamthitta constituency, currently held by Congress.
Facing the possibility of Padmaja Venugopal's joining BJP, tensions rise for Congress. Padmaja has contested the Thrissur seat in the 2016 and 2021 assembly elections, without securing a win, while the 2004 Lok Sabha elections also resulted in a loss for her.
