The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by Odisha's former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, has altered its stance on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Initially opposing the bill, the party has now granted its MPs the freedom to make independent decisions during voting. BJD has clarified that no whip will be issued on this bill and its Rajya Sabha MPs are free to vote according to their conscience.

From Opposition to Neutral Stance

Previously, BJD strongly opposed the bill, deeming it against the interests of minorities. However, as the bill is set to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha, the party has permitted its MPs to vote at their discretion.

BJD's Official Statement

BJD's National Spokesperson stated on X, "Biju Janata Dal has always adhered to the principles of secularism and inclusivity, ensuring the protection of all communities' rights. We respect the sentiments expressed by various sections of minority communities. Considering these perspectives, we have given our honorable MPs the freedom to vote in the best interests of justice, harmony, and the rights of all communities. No party whip has been issued on this matter."

Just a Day Before, There Was Opposition

This statement followed Patra's remarks on Wednesday, where he mentioned that BJD's Rajya Sabha MP Mujibur Khan would represent the Muslim community and voice the party's concerns in the house about the bill. Patra also noted the party's dissatisfaction with the bill, asserting that some points were amended after review by a joint parliamentary committee.
