A district court in Bhopal has convicted a mother for the brutal murder of her own one-month-old daughter, sentencing her to life imprisonment and imposing a fine of one thousand rupees. Judge Atul Saxena ruled that daughters are not just part of families, but they are also crucial links in civilization, culture, and national development. The prosecution was led by special prosecutor Sudha Vijay Singh Bhadouria, and the verdict was detailed in a 104-page document which also made special remarks about daughters.

In an exclusive conversation with Aaj Tak, special prosecutor Bhadouria expressed that after five years, success was achieved in delivering justice for the infant, but highlighted that the statements made by Bhopal District Court were most significant.

The court emphasized that in today's world, daughters represent strong emblems of culture, civilization, and nation-building. Even scriptures consider daughters as bonds of hearts, beats of emotions, bases of creativity, forms of devotion, and cultural impressions. In contemporary India, daughters stand as vivid icons of bravery, creativity, service, civility, beauty, and empowerment. The verdict also referenced a line by Rabindranath Tagore - 'When a daughter is born, it's proof that God is not displeased with mankind, as he manifests himself through daughters.'

The incident occurred on September 16, 2020. Special prosecutor Bhadouria explained that on the morning of the incident, around 11 AM the accused mother, Sarita Mewara, informed people outside that she had placed her one-month-old daughter, Kinjal, to sleep on a cot, but later found her missing.

The family and neighbors started a search. After hours, around 4 PM, the infant's body was discovered in a water tank inside the house.

When Kinjal's father, Sachin Mewara, sternly questioned his wife Sarita, she broke down and admitted to putting Kinjal in the water tank herself and closing the lid.

Sarita harbored a desire for a son and was displeased with the birth of her daughter. In her frustration, she seized the opportunity to mercilessly murder her infant daughter and did not confess due to fear.

Now, five years later, the court has sentenced the mother to life imprisonment for this brutal murder, also sending a message that daughters are divine gifts and the mentality of perceiving them as burdens must be eradicated with determination.

A symbolic representation of justice being served.
