In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a tragic accident claimed the lives of three people who were traveling using GPS navigation. The bridge they aimed to cross was still under construction and lacked any warning markers or barricades. As a result, the car plunged down the unfinished section. In response, local authorities have erected a temporary wall to prevent further accidents.
An FIR has been filed at Dataganj police station in Badaun, holding engineers from the public works department, Google's regional manager, and unidentified locals accountable for the negligence that led to this disaster.
On a grim Sunday morning in the Fareedpur area of Bareilly, an incomplete bridge across the Ramganga river resulted in the death of three people. Post-accident, officials have been blamed, with the commissioner's order leading to the filing of a case.
Commissioner's Directive Results in Legal Action
Commissioner Soumya Agrawal stated that a case has been filed against the PWD. Both Badaun and Bareilly DMs will conduct investigations. The case includes names such as Assistant Engineer Mohammad Arif and others, along with Google's regional manager.
Ajay Kumar, Chief Engineer's Statement – Watch the Video
Bridge Corporation's regional engineer commented that in 2021, the bridge was handed over to the PWD. It's their responsibility now, as the bridge had no approach road.
Approach Road Cut in July
The bridge connecting Badaun to Bareilly was designed to span the Ramganga river at Khallapur village. However, the approach road was swept away last year, leaving the bridge precariously open towards the river.
Bridge Constructed in 2020
The bridge, built in 2020 to link Bareilly and Badaun, cost around 40 crore rupees. Sadly, negligence over the approach road resulted in an incomplete project until this fatal incident occurred.
Approach Road Washed Away Last Year
After local pressure, PWD constructed a 2 km approach road last year, but it was eroded by the Ramganga's currents. No reconstruction efforts were made.
Lack of Bridge Completion Severed Connectivity for 250 Villages
The unfinished bridge isolates Bareilly and Badaun, forcing over 250 villages to detour. Locals demanded road repairs, but to no avail.
Police Statement
Circle Officer Ashutosh Shivam mentioned the bridge's condition wasn't updated in GPS systems post-floods. This oversight resulted in the car's tragic plunge. The family's post-mortem claims align with the absence of road barricades that led to this disaster.
Families of the victims lay much of the blame on departmental negligence, expressed through incomplete construction and lack of proper signage or barricades.
