The murder of Anwarul Azim Anar, a Member of Parliament from Bangladesh's ruling Awami League, has sent shockwaves through both India and Bangladesh. Authorities in both countries are tirelessly working to unravel this murder mystery. Police mention the involvement of the MP's childhood friend and now, a honey trap twist has come to light, with the arrest of the butcher responsible for dismembering the body.
West Bengal police suspect the MP was lured to a Kolkata flat under the false pretense of a honey trap, where he was subsequently murdered.
Investigations hint at the involvement of a close female associate of the MP's friend, who lured Anwarul to the said flat. The MP's visit to the flat is believed to have led to his immediate murder.
CCTV footage shows Anwarul entering the flat with a man and a woman. These two individuals were later seen leaving the flat and re-entering the next day, but the MP was never seen leaving. The suspects were spotted carrying large trolley suitcases into the flat.
Police state that this was a premeditated murder, with the MP's long-time friend commissioning the killing for a substantial fee of approximately 50 million rupees.
West Bengal CID makes first arrest linked to the murder of the Bangladeshi MP after apprehending an individual named Jihad Haldar. Known as a professional butcher, he was specially brought from Mumbai by the mastermind of the murder, Akhtaruzzaman, to execute the deed.
Sources reveal Jihad had been engaged for this task two months prior and was called to Kolkata from Mumbai. A portion of the hefty contract for the assassination was reportedly already paid to Jihad, who was staying at a hotel near the Kolkata airport.
Initial investigations uncovered that a close American citizen friend of the MP had placed the 50 million rupee contract on the legislator's life.
Detailed police probing suggests that Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen, the MP's childhood friend, plotted the murder's due to a business feud. Hailing from Jhenaidah, Shaheen holds American citizenship as well. His brother is the mayor of the Kotchandpur municipality in Jhenaidah, and Anwarul represented the same locality as an MP.
Shaheen traveled to Kolkata with Amal and his female friend, Celesta Rahman, on April 30. They rented a duplex in Sanjiba Garden, Kolkata, where Shaheen's associates Siam and Jihad were already stationed to carry out the murder plot together.
Shaheen returned to Bangladesh on May 10 and delegated the murder's completion to Amal. According to the plan, Amal summoned two more hitmen from Bangladesh to Kolkata. Faizal Shazi and Mustafij arrived in Kolkata on May 11 and joined the conspiracy.
Amal was aware that the MP would be Kolkata-bound on May 12. He prepared for the murder, including purchasing sharp weapons for the deed. MP Anwarul crossed the border into Kolkata via the Darshan border on May 12, staying the first day at his friend Gopal's house. The next day, the assassins invited him to their flat.
Amal along with his accomplices Faizal, Mustafij, Siam, and Jihad, ambushed Anwarul on May 13 at the Sanjiba Garden apartment. Amidst a frenzy, they suffocated Anwarul with a pillow. Post the murder, Amal informed Shaheen of the deed.
Intelligence officers noted that Shaheen had instructed the dismemberment of Anwarul's body to dispose of it easily. Large trolley bags and polythene were purchased from a nearby mall for this purpose, and the body was stored in them.
On the night of the murder, the body pieces were kept in the apartment while the killers fetched bleaching powder from outside to clean the blood stains in the flat.
According to sources, Kolkata police possess CCTV footage showing Amal and his accomplices carrying the trolley bags and Anwarul's shoes. Shaheen's female friend was spotted on camera bringing polythene and bleaching powder from the outside.
The plot thickened as Amal's accomplices carried away Anwarul's two phones, confusing investigators. Faizal and Mustafij then returned to Bangladesh on May 17.
Sources suggest the mastermind Shaheen traveled back to Dhaka on May 10 after planning the murder. Fleeing the media frenzy post the MP's disappearance, Shaheen went to Nepal via India on May 18 and left for Dubai on May 21, eventually moving on to the United States on May 22.
Officials believe that the murder of MP Anwarul was tied to a dispute over gold smuggling proceeds. Rumors point to Shaheen as a gold smuggler and allegations claim MP Anwarul was involved in gold smuggling as well.
MP Anwarul was elected consecutively three times to office in 2014, 2018, and 2024, representing the Jhenaidah-4 constituency under the Awami League party.
The assassination of Bangladeshi MP in Kolkata unravels with new leads and a sinister plot involving trusted friends and deadly schemes.
